• Our School

Welcome visitors to the Douglass Elementary community.  Where teaching and training students to be productive members of society has been the priority from it's inception in 1883 by Andrew Morelock. Andrew Morelock organized the first and only private black school in El Paso. The priority of the school was to teach and train all students to be productive  members of our society. This continues to be our focus to this present day as is evident with our prestigious National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. This award honors schools for academic excellence and for significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

Douglass Elementary - A Success Story

The school was named Frederick Douglass to honor the great abolitionist who over came such adversities as being separated from his mother who was then sold, not learning how to read because it was against the law to teach blacks how to read, and many other economic and social hurdles levied against the Negro people.

Though our demographics has changed to an almost a completely Hispanic Community and the challenges that incur by being a border community, our goal and mission have not changed since 1883, teaching and training students to be productive members of society. Feel free to move around our website and take a glimpse at some of the activities that our students participate in that ensure their chance of becoming productive members and future leaders within our society.
