Our School
Clendenin Elementary first opened in 1966 as Bassett Elementary. It was then renamed and dedicated in honor of Mrs. Maybelle Clendenin in the fall of 1983. Mrs. Clendenin was born in Duluth, Minnesota but grew up in Missouri where she went to college and became a school teacher. She came to El Paso in 1929 with her husband and began working with the PTA in her son's school. In 1949 she was appointed as an EPISD School Board Trustee. She was reelected several times and served for 19 years on the Board. She was also very active in civic clubs but continued to make time to be involved in the area schools.
Clendenin went through some growth and expansion in 1991 where a cafeteria, library, and two wings of classrooms were added. Today Clendenin services approximately 500 students from grades PreKinder through 5th offering both English and Dual Language classes. The school also offer many different academic and creative afterschool activities.Through a partnership with Boys and Girls Club of El Paso, Clendenin now offers an art program, Creative Kids, that works with 2nd graders to learn the different concepts of art to produce a painted portrait at the end of the program. They also offer a dance program, Excel Kids, that teaches students in 4th grade the different elements of dance, which can lead to an invitation to the city wide dance group that has an end of year performance. Students can also join the Sylvan learning group to get extra academic help in reading and math. Students can also join The Boys and Girls Club, that meets everyday that school is in session from 3:30-6:30, where students can get help with homework during the Power Hour and also develop their minds, body, and spirits during Triple Play. Students who decide to not stay after school can sign up for the afterschool meal program where participating students recieve a free entree, side and fruit dessert before they head home. 5th grade students looking for an academic challenge can join the Young Scholars Bowl, which holds a once a year competition that challenges students public speaking skills, vocabulary knowledge and writing skills.
