World War II veteran Dr. Joseph E. Torres dedicated his life to serving the El Paso community as a dentist, veterans advocate and philanthropist. A graduate of El Paso High and Texas College of Mines (now UTEP), Torres served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II first as an infantryman then as a bombardier and navigator. Torres later joined and served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps Reserve and eventually joined the Air Force Dental Reserves where he reached the rank of colonel. He served and founded various veterans groups in the community, always advocating to improve conditions and benefits for military veterans in the region. As a dentist, Torres provided low and no cost dental services to low-income families. He continued to operate his dental practice until his death at 93.
