    El Paso ISD recognizes that part of success in early learning comes from reading, and we are launching a new initiative to foster a love for literacy. Buenas Noches, El Paso will feature an El Paso ISD leader or notable El Pasoan reading a children’s book. We hope you’ll invite us into your home while you cook dinner with your kids, while on a road trip, or as you tuck in your children at night. Together, we can instill a lifelong love of reading.

    Juanita Quinones Gandara was born in Cd. Juarez Chihuahua, Mexico and raised in El Paso, TX. She graduated with a bachelor's Degree in Bilingual Education from the University of Texas at El Paso and a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX. Gandara is now pursuing her second career as a children's author and founder of Zoila’s Words of Wisdom, a highly interactive anti-bullying prevention program.

    Pete the Cat Saves Christmas by Eric Litwin

    Congresswoman Veronica Escobar spent an afternoon reading to the children of Mesita ECDC. She proudly represents Texas’ 16th Congressional District in El Paso. She took office on January 3, 2019 as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives after making history as the first woman elected to this seat and the first of two Latinas from Texas to serve in Congress. As a third-generation El Pasoan, Congresswoman Escobar has dedicated her life’s work to improving the lives of El Pasoans.

  • How do I Love You by Marion Dane Bauer

    Johnny Kage started DJing in Juárez nightclubs before making his way to 104.3 HIT FM about 21 years ago. He now hosts the Morning Mash, Noontime Workout, and a show on Pitbull’s SiriusXM channel 13, Globalization, which airs nationwide every Saturday afternoon. Kage is one of Pitbull’s touring DJs and has been recognized by the City of El Paso as one of the most influential voices on the radio.

    Zuill Bailey is a Grammy-award-winning musician considered one of the premiere cellists in the world. The artistic director of El Paso ProMusica, one of the most sought-after cellists today, has been featured with symphony orchestras worldwide. He also dedicates his time and artistry to providing university-level master classes and educational outreach in schools to enlighten, entertain, and inspire a new generation of classical musicians. In this segment of “Buenas Noches, El Paso,” he leaves his online audience with the sweet sounds of the cello, lulling them to sleep to Brahm's “Lullaby.”

    Change Sings by Amanda Gorman

    Diana Sayavedra became the first Latina superintendent of El Paso ISD in 2022. An expert in curriculum and instruction, Sayavedra started her teaching career more than 30 years ago in Laredo, Texas, where she grew up. She has served in different leadership roles in education throughout the state including a stint as interim superintendent of Fort Bend ISD

    Carlos Ojeda Jr. has been called one of the most dynamic youth empowerment speakers in America today. He focuses his energy on empowering students to succeed by teaching them that their voice is their power. Combining his entrepreneurial spirit with his passion for changing the lives of youth across the country, he started CoolSpeak: The Youth Engagement Company.

    Loose Tooth by Robert Munsch

    Dr. Paul Ro, DDS, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his dental degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Dr. Ro is currently part of the community faculty at the Hunt School of Dental Medicine where he teaches and mentors students as they complete their studies. He has been practicing dentistry in the El Paso area since 1999, helping to keep thousands of mouths healthy and happy.

    Dario Garcia, a self-taught certified American Sign Language interpreter, has earned both interpreter certifications at the state and national level. His interpretation experience includes vocational rehabilitation, local government, microbiology work and travel and tourism interpretation. He enjoys visiting different countries and experiencing diverse cultures.

    Louise and Andie: The Art of Friendship by Kelly Light

    Marina Monsisvais is CEO of El Paso’s premiere public relations agency, Barracuda Public Relations. The Burges High grad serves on the board of directors of The Hospitals of Providence, YWCA Paso del Norte, Pioneers 21, Texas Lyceum, El Paso Chamber of Commerce and Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. She’s an arts advocate and hosts “State of the Arts” on the local NPR station, KTEP 88.5FM. An avid music collector, and former radio disc jockey, she’s an all-vinyl DJ who shares her record collection throughout El Paso.

    El Paso native Phillip D. Cortez brings to life “Pancakes for Dinner,” one of his six published children’s books for Buenas Noches El Paso. He began his career as a freelance sports writer, writing stories for his local paper and later moving on to writing editorials and feature stories for different publications.

    Natasha Carrizosa is a teacher, poet, writer, author, master of ceremonies, keynote speaker, facilitator and spoken word artist. Her book, “Crown” is about being your authentic self, overcoming adversity, mindfulness, and self-care, spirituality, motherhood, teenage life, gratitude, hopes & dreams, and growing up different (roots) from bullying to self-actualization (crown).

    The Astronaut With A Song For The Stars by Julia Finley Mosca

    Katya Echazarreta is the co-host of Netflix's YouTube series, Netflix IRL, while pursuing a Master's degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. She became the first Mexican-born woman in space as part of the Space for Humanity's Citizen Astronaut Program, launched June 4, 2022.

    Iris Lopez, a former KVIA weather anchor and reporter, can be heard weekday mornings on 93.1’s Morning with Mike and Iris. The UTEP graduate is the founder and executive director of a local non-profit organization, Mija, Yes you can. She advocates for empowering women in the El Paso community and advocates for promoting the importance of talking about mental health.

    Kolby Amici, El Paso Rhinos’ hockey captain, has been playing hockey since age 2 and intents to play in college next season. The Orchard Park, NY native is fan favorite in El Paso.

    Elmer y el Clima by David McKee

    Monica Cortez, chief meteorologist for KTSM 9 News, grew up wanting to be a journalist. From writing stories about the community to providing the latest in weather news, the El Paso native has found her niche. She’s a graduate of Mississippi State, where she earned her Meteorology seal, and enjoys sharing her passion for meteorology through her trademark projects “Weather Watchers” and “Weather Warriors.”

     


  • A Girl Names Rosita     by Anika Aldamuy Denise

    Rosa Guerrero is an artist, educator, dance historian and humanitarian. She’s been called “a tapestry of many cultures whose mission is to share this tapestry of cultural diversity, and how its woven, with all people.” The founder of the International Folklorico Dance Group earned national accolades for her film “Tapestry.” El Paso ISD recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the school that bears her name.
