Richardson IB students tie dye face masks for community organizations
(RICHARDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL -- May 5, 2021) — El Paso’s perfect May weather gave the Richardson art students a chance to soak in the sun while transforming 600 plain white masks into tiny, tie-dyed masterpieces for the community.
Sixty face-to-face students spent their art period outside getting a little messy using white masks as their canvases to create colorful, artsy masks for residents of the Women’s Shelter, Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home and other organizations. The project incorporates their school’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme profile of caring and community.
“We love color and we wanted to give them something colorful that the kids participated in rather than giving them a plain white mask,” said art teacher Melissa Clark. “They’re having a lot of fun and they’re excited about giving back to their community.”
For eighth grader Fabian Mendoza being outside made the experience even more enjoyable.
“I like that we’re outside and having fun making masks with everyone,” he said. “Corona isn’t stopping us from doing things.”
Both he and his sister Sophie Mendoza spent a part of their morning tie dyeing masks. Both also liked the community aspect of the project.
“It makes me feel happy because I love giving stuff to other people,” Sophie said. “And we get to do something artsy.”
