El Paso ISD Nurse Honored as TSNO Region 19 School Nurse of the Year
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – June 26, 2024) — The Texas School Nurses Organization (TSNO) Region-19 has declared El Paso ISD Float Nurse, Grace Carbajal, as the 2023-24 School Nurse of the Year.
Carbajal brings over 30 years of nursing experience to her role, with 17 years spent as a school nurse across various districts in the El Paso region. In 2022, she joined El Paso ISD as a float nurse, providing care and support to students of all grade levels. “When I became a school nurse, I quickly understood the multifaceted nature of my new role,” Carbajal said. “I wasn’t just a nurse; I was a mentor, an educator, and a counselor.”
As a float nurse, Carbajal embraces the challenges that come with working at various campuses. “I strive to provide optimal quality nursing care, efficiently and effectively,” Carbajal added. “I am committed to offering a holistic approach by performing thorough student assessments, prioritizing their medical care, and engaging students in their self-care.”
Carbajal’s commitment to her profession extends beyond her daily duties. She has actively participated in volunteer programs such as the Muscular Dystrophy summer camp and served as a clinical group supervisor during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognized for her exceptional service, Carbajal will now represent Region 19 in the statewide competition for Texas School Nurse of the Year. The winner will be announced at the annual TSNO conference on November 3, 2024, in Frisco, Texas.
“I love the nursing profession,” Carbajal said. “As a school nurse, it is essential to promote health and safety through teaching and practice, provide diligent care by following up, be a resource, and serve as a role model not only to our community but also to our peers.”
El Paso ISD celebrates this prestigious recognition and wishes Carbajal the best of luck in the state competition.
