New Teacher Support Academy welcomes EPISD newest educators
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- July 20, 2021) — EPISD’s newest educators this week learned more about the ins and outs of the district, met key staff and added to their teacher toolbox during the New Teacher Support Academy at the Professional Development.
This year, the district welcomed 62 new teachers representing all grade levels and content areas — some veterans and some new to the profession. The teachers heard presentations from Human Resources, curriculum & Instruction, Family Engagement, Special Education, Technology and other key departments during their two-day training.
“They’re on fire right now — learning and enriching their knowledge,” said Davette Alonzo, professional development specialist. “Everything they have in their toolbox they are going to put to use this coming year.”
New pre-k teacher Aylin Herrera became a teacher knowing the impact she could have on their education – especially after a year of virtual learning. She looks forward to getting to know her students at Rivera Elemetary in person.
“I wanted students to comeback happy to school,” said the recent UTEP grads. “I know it will be difficult – after a year of technology – but if we include technology with tradition education, we can still get students moving forward.”
Former substitute Hector Soto decided made the move to permanent teacher this school year. He’ll be teaching fourth-grade ESL at Barron Elementary.
“One of the reasons I got into education was because I thought there was a need to step up after the pandemic and during the pandemic. It is going to be challenging but as long as we connect with students, I think we can make advances in any learning losses,” he said. “I’m excited, really looking forward to teaching. I feel like it’s the beginning of the rest of my life.”
