Silva service club continues work online
(SILVA HEALTH MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL -- April 8, 2020) — Silva Health Magnet’s Club 365 hasn’t stopped giving back and thinking about others during the past few weeks, but their efforts have gone digital.
Most recently, the club had been looking forward to supporting the Annual Cystic Fibrosis Walk – Zipping for Zoey. Its cancellation inspired them to create a video to show some love to the event’s namesake, Zoey, a little girl who has been living with the chronic disease since she was 16 days old. The video featured an uplifting message to little Zoey from dozens of the club’s members.
“Although many things have been shut down due to (COVID-19), that definitely did not stop us from doing a virtual message,” said Silva sophomore Alyssa Cisneros. “It is important to continue to help others during these times because it could help relieve some stress and it continues to remind us how blessed we are. Living through these times help us to appreciate our normal life and not take it for granted.”
Students meet online every Monday to discuss ideas to make a difference in their community from home.
“Many people during this time stop helping and volunteering because they believe that there is nothing they can do from home,” said senior Isabella Chavez. “Club 365 wants to show that it is important to continue doing what we do no matter the distance barriers.”
Currently, members are creating a video of their different hobbies to share a positive message. They also are working on creating messages for the upcoming freshmen class and continuing to look for more ways to help.
“We strive to raise awareness and above all support people who need it,” said club president Brooke Connor. “It is important to continue to help people during these times because we are all afraid and everyone needs support right now. Our country is in a crisis and helping people have hope during this time is crucial.”
Denise Galvez, Silva CTE coordinator, is proud of her students and their willingness to stay virtually engaged with their community during the stay at home order.
“We need to ensure our students remain connected and fulfill their purpose as Club 365 members,” Galvez said. “Students who love to serve others, feel especially compelled to help others during this time. Remaining active allows for these students to share their passion for serving others.”
