Summer graduation adds more than 50 members to the historic EPISD Class of 2020
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Aug. 5, 2020) — EPISD’s historic Class of 2020 is now complete.
The last batch of seniors who qualified to graduate this school year walked the stage on Wednesday morning to receive their diploma and are now official alumni of their respective schools.
About 50 students who completed their high-school graduation during the summer participated in the small, but emotive ceremony at the Bowie High School auditorium. They join the more than 5,000 graduates who participated in ceremonies in June.
“This is not the senior year any of you expected,” said Dr. Carla Gonzales, EPISD’s Associate Superintendent for Academics & School Leadership. “But this pandemic has taught us that you as students and individuals have the capacity to overcome any obstacle that is ahead of you.”
Graduates from Andress, Austin, Bowie, Burges, Chapin, Coronado, El Paso, Franklin, Irvin, Jefferson and Silva Health Magnet high schools as well as the College, Career & Technology Academy graduated during the summer.
The ceremony featured safety precautions in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, including health screenings, social distancing and a limited number of guests per graduate.
Still, the ceremony featured the traditional activities for any graduation: a procession of graduates, the roll call of seniors on stage and the turning of the tassel.
