From JROTC to Naval Cadet: Meet the Chapin grad who was appointed to the Naval Academy

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Jun. 7, 2024) — A Chapin graduate is continuing her military aspirations post high school. Americas Huerta, who has been a part of the Husky JROTC program for years, was recently appointed to the United States Naval Academy. She explained to El Paso ISD why it has always been her dream to join the program.

How did it feel when you were accepted into the Naval Academy?

I was very excited when I found out that I had been accepted into the program. It has been one of my goals to join the Naval Academy since I was in 8th grade. It has a lot of opportunity tied into it. Plus, I get to explore the world, and getting to serve my country at the same time is something that I think is great.

What programs are you interested in at the Naval Academy?

I’ve always been interested in the fields of engineering and aerospace, but I’m also interested in other things the Naval Academy can offer me. For instance, I’ve always been interested to go on ships and explore the world and that is one of the reasons why I applied for the program. I can’t deny, it does scare me a bit because I know it’s going to be a shift from my everyday life, but I’m looking forward to what it has to offer.

How long did the entire process take?

It has been a long process. I began my application since last July and I’ve been working on it throughout my senior year. To get the congressional nomination, I had to write an essay and talk about the person who inspired me on my journey. I also had to get a few letters of recommendation and do a video essay about why you want to join the program. After the long process, I finally get to leave to the academy at the end of June!

What are you looking forward to the most?

I’m looking forward to learning about this new culture. I know it’s going to be scary, but I think it’ll be fun. I’m also interested in the sports and academic programs.

Do you have any advice to share to the incoming freshman students?

I would say to those who are thinking of following in my footsteps would be to just persevere and keep moving forward. Don’t be discouraged and keep applying. I’ll admit that it’s a lot of work, but at the end of the day, it’s a rewarding decision.
