Charles Middle launches Green & Gold Gazette student newspaper
(H.E. CHARLES MIDDLE SCHOOL -- Dec. 16, 2020) — The students and staff at Charles Middle are now better informed of the news and ongoings impacting the school thanks to a new online publication written and published entirely by students.
The first edition of the Green & Gold Gazette published this week with news stories, features, word puzzles and even an original comic strip. This is believed to be the first-ever newspaper at Charles Middle.
“The pandemic created the need to provide students with more opportunities to stay involved, and this newspaper is a great way to filling that need,” said Florangela Calderon, the librarian at Charles and the Newspaper Club sponsor. “We had talked about creating this club and publishing a newspaper for a while, and we figured that this was the perfect time to do it. The students jumped on board and we made it happen.”
Students contributed by writing, editing and drawing the featured articles.
This edition included news about events for Charles students — like the virtual visit of author Francisco X. Stork and a Zoom concert by the band — and topical columns about the COVID-19 pandemic. It also included “Stuck in the Middle,” an original comic strip about life in middle school by student Megan Moran.
The newspaper is co-sponsored by teacher Rosa Guillermo. Other student journalists involved include Liliana Zavala, Cassie Raya, Joshua Kapoor, Elizabeth Gomez, America Montes and Maria Sonora.
Calderon said students hope to publish monthly and could upgrade to twice a month if there is a demand for it and club membership increases.
“We are so excited to provide this service to the students and the staff at Charles. We know the pandemic has created difficulties in staying connected and this is one more way to keep us all informed and aware of what we are all doing,” she said.
