Burges StuCo earns National Gold Council of Excellence Award
(BURGES HIGH SCHOOL – May 20, 2022) – Burges High School earned the 2022 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council for its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community.
Burges High School’s student council has been a perennial sweepstakes council in the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC), regularly being sought out to participate on state-level advisory councils and committees.
“I am so proud of what we were able to create,” said Angelica Rivera, the NatStuCo chair and senior class vice-president. “Our committee executed a beautiful Texan themed portfolio that tells this year’s journey of our council and campus. In the end, all the long Saturdays and late nights were worth it to find out that our binder earned this Gold standard for student councils.”
Under current advisor Ruth Bohlin, the council has served as secretary (2019) and president (2021) to the TASC District IX Board of Directors. They were elected to serve this next school year as District 9 Parliamentarians.
“It is a privilege to get to work so closely with a group of students who are eager and so driven to make a positive difference,” Bohlin said. “Not too many people know how much time and effort student council leaders put into giving back to their campus and community, and while our leaders don't seek out credit for all they do, it is nice to see that, in this instance, student council has received some well-deserved recognition.”
NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe said receiving a National Gold Council of Excellence Award shows the dedication a school’s student leaders have made to making their community a better place.
“Burges’ student council has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice...as well as fostering academic and social growth for all.”
Bohlin credits the hard work and dedication of Rivera and committee members senior Marisol Castillo, sophomores Sarah Ortiz and Jesus Reyes and freshman Sarah Ortiz for receiving this award. Burges student council is made up of 43 reported active members and 10 executive officers.
