UTEP Residency Program Details

Elementary, middle grades, and special education candidates pursuing the B.S. in Education will complete the year-long residency as part of their plans of study. If you are in an earlier program (B.A. in Applied Learning and Development), you can apply to be part of the residency.
Secondary and all-levels teacher candidates selected to be part of the 2021-2022 Miner Teacher Residency will commit to the full-year of student-teaching. Residents will be expected to participate in a two-day UTEP orientation in July 2021.
Prior to and during 1st semester Residency I), residents will:
- Attend all staff development and the entire first week of school
- Work in an assigned classroom alongside a designated mentor teacher four full days/week, with one day devoted to campus responsibilities defined in the district-UTEP partnership
- Engage in professional development workshops, planning activities, and faculty meetings alongside a mentor teacher
- Participate in planning with a mentor teacher and grade-level team
- Take literacy and math methods courses on-site at partner school one day/week
- Take a 3-credit internship/residency course that includes a weekly seminar taught on-site by the UTEP Site Coordinator
- Successfully complete all content certification exams, if not already completed prior to start of Residency I
During 2nd semester (Residency II), residents will:
- Work in an assigned classroom alongside a designated mentor teacher four days/week, with one day devoted to campus responsibilities defined in the district-UTEP partnership
- Engage in all professional development workshops, planning activities, and faculty meetings alongside a mentor teacher
- Participate in planning with a mentor teacher and grade-level team
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and other school-community activities
- Enroll in the 6-credit residency course and participate in weekly seminars taught on-site by the UTEP Site Coordinator
- Participate in monthly Professional Development Seminars at UTEP and the Spring Job Fair
- Successfully complete all requirements for edTPA (in lieu of PPR #160 exam)
- Apply for early consideration for a full-time teaching position with a partner district
