FAQs

  • What is Title 42?

Title 42 is a pandemic-era order whose expiration this week has prompted the City of El Paso to declare a state of emergency in anticipation of a large influx of migrants arriving at the U.S. border.

How many and which El Paso ISD campuses will be utilized to support this effort?

Two facilities, specifically, the former Bassett Middle School and the former Morehead Middle School will be offered to the city via a facilities-use agreement to temporarily shelter migrating families.

Why is El Paso ISD opening campuses for non-academic reasons?

The city anticipates an influx of 4,000-6,000 migrants weekly. The city, county, local nonprofits and the Red Cross, collectively do not have adequate sheltering facilities for this influx of migrants. Therefore, El Paso ISD will provide facilities for sheltering purposes to support the city's efforts.

How will El Paso ISD pay for the use of its facilities and resources?

These facilities are being offered via a facilities-use agreement, which will require the city to pay for their use. All other expenses will be incurred by the city.

How will the safety of those inside and outside El Paso ISD facilities be ensured?

The city has pledged to commit all resources necessary to house these individuals including heightened security measures such as 24-hour law enforcement patrol, secured perimeters and partitioned fencing in any location that is adjacent to an operating campus.

Who can I call with security concerns?

If you have concerns, please email us at shelter@episd.org. You can also call the city's information line at 3-1-1. For immediate security concerns, please call 911.
